Why Isn't My Website Ranking on Google? 9 Common Reasons

Having a site and ranking on Google are two different things

This is the most common frustration we hear: "I have a website, why can't anyone find it?" A website with zero SEO work behind it is essentially invisible — Google doesn't rank pages just because they exist. Here are the reasons we see most often.

1. It was never actually indexed

Check Google Search Console. If your pages aren't indexed, they can't rank for anything, period. This happens more often than people expect, especially on sites launched without any SEO setup.

2. It's brand new

New sites take time to earn trust with Google — expect a "sandbox" period of weeks to a few months before rankings start moving meaningfully, even with everything else done right.

3. There's no real content targeting what people search

A homepage that says "Welcome to Acme Plumbing" without ever using the phrases customers actually search for gives Google very little to match you against. Content needs to speak the customer's language, not just describe your business.

4. Thin or duplicate content

Pages with a paragraph or two of generic text, or the same content copy-pasted across multiple city pages with only the city name swapped, rarely rank. Google increasingly rewards genuinely useful, specific content over templated filler.

5. Missing technical SEO basics

No title tags, no meta descriptions, no header structure, no schema markup — these are foundational, not optional. A site missing them is starting the race with a handicap.

6. It's slow

Page speed is a confirmed ranking factor, and slow sites also bleed visitors before Google even gets a chance to rank them — a double hit.

7. Zero backlinks

Links from other reputable sites are still one of the strongest ranking signals. A site with no links pointing to it is competing on content alone against competitors who have both content and authority.

8. No local pages or local schema (for local businesses)

If you serve multiple cities or neighborhoods but only have one generic "service area" paragraph, you're leaving most local search volume on the table.

9. Technical errors — redirects, broken links, mobile issues

Redirect chains, broken internal links, and a poor mobile experience all quietly suppress rankings even when the content itself is solid.

How to find out which one applies to you

Google Search Console and a proper technical audit will tell you exactly which of these are in play — guessing wastes time. Most sites we audit have three or four of these stacked on top of each other, not just one.

Bottom line

Ranking is the result of specific, fixable factors — not luck. If your site has been live for months with nothing to show for it, something on this list is almost certainly the reason. We offer a free audit that identifies exactly which ones apply to your site.
