What the map pack actually is
Search "AC repair near me" or "roofer in Tampa" and Google shows a map with three businesses above every organic result. That's the map pack, and it gets the overwhelming majority of clicks and calls for local searches. If you're not one of the three, you're fighting for scraps further down the page — or invisible entirely.
The real reasons you're not in it
1. Your Google Business Profile is thin or unverified
An unclaimed, unverified, or half-filled-out profile almost never ranks. Google needs to trust that your business is real, active, and matches what the searcher wants — a sparse profile gives it no reason to.
2. You picked the wrong primary category
"Contractor" instead of "Plumber," "Home Improvement" instead of "Deck Builder" — a vague or mismatched primary category is one of the most common map-pack killers. Google matches categories to search intent directly; a generic category makes you invisible for specific searches.
3. Your NAP doesn't match everywhere
Name, address, and phone number need to be identical across your website, your Google profile, Yelp, Facebook, and every directory that mentions you. A different suite number or an old phone number floating around online quietly erodes the trust signal Google uses to rank you.
4. You don't have enough recent reviews
Review count and review recency are both ranking factors. A profile with 4 reviews from three years ago loses to a competitor with 60 reviews, 12 of them from the last month. Consistency beats a one-time push.
5. Your website has no local signal
Google cross-references your website against your profile. If your site never mentions the city you serve, has no address, and no local schema markup, you're giving Google less reason to trust the location data on your profile.
6. You're too far from the searcher — or your service area is set wrong
Map pack results are proximity-weighted. If your service-area settings in your Google profile are too broad, too narrow, or don't match where you actually work, you can lose visibility even in areas you legitimately serve.
The fix, in order
- Claim and fully verify your Google Business Profile if you haven't already — this alone unlocks eligibility.
- Set the most specific accurate primary category, then add relevant secondary categories.
- Audit your NAP across your site, GBP, and top directories, and fix every mismatch.
- Build a simple review-request habit — ask every satisfied customer, same day if possible.
- Add a real address or service-area block, city name, and LocalBusiness schema to your website.
- Confirm your service areas in Google Business Profile match where you actually want jobs.
How long it takes
Profile and NAP fixes can show movement in 2–6 weeks. Review velocity and on-site local signals compound over months, not days — this is a "keep doing it" game, not a one-time fix. Businesses that treat it as ongoing consistently outrank the ones that do a single push and stop.
Bottom line
Map pack visibility isn't random — it's built from a specific, checkable set of signals. If your business is missing from the 3-pack for searches you should be winning, we offer a free audit that pinpoints exactly which of these is holding you back.
